Chapter 11

Women Breaking Barriers

In a country where the female workforce participation has gone from 27 per cent to as low as 19 per cent* during the pandemic, what irks me more than this shocking statistic is all of us being in denial mode. What I mean is that several men, and often women too, are clueless about the biases that women in our country are subject to and think that it is indeed a thing of the past. When a country has such dismal statistics, we need more women to speak up, have their voices heard, their opinions and their struggles highlighted. Most importantly, we need a non-judgemental society that doesn’t instantly label this as ‘self-victimizing feminist behaviour’. Well, if it were really a thing of the past, we would not have such tragic workforce participation numbers nor would we have global numbers such as this: only 2.3 per cent** of women-led ventures got funded in 2020! So can we get out of denial mode and into action mode?

Do women still get judged? Sometimes directly or sometimes in hushed tones for any or all of the following?

Will she come back after her maternity leave or get too attached to the baby?

Will she relocate if her husband does?

Will she be able to put in the long hours and travel the job demands?

Will she be able to handle harsh feedback?
